The 2026 Formula Windsurf European Championship came to an exciting end after seven races in Lagos, Portugal, held from 3–7 June. Sailors from many countries competed in the Grand Master, Master, Legend, Senior and Youth categories, enjoying challenging conditions and great racing on the Atlantic coast.
The star of the event was Brazilian rider Leonardo Mulim, who dominated the championship by winning six of the seven races to take the Grand Master title. Portugal’s Mario Medeiros finished second, while Italy’s Francesco Leoni claimed third overall and also won the Senior category. In the Legend division, another Brazilian, Carlos Alberto Isaac, took the victory.
The championship, organized by Vasco Chaveca (POR-6), once again impressed competitors with excellent organization both on and off the water. The race venue, race management and friendly atmosphere created perfect conditions for the event.
The first days brought strong and gusty winds between 15 and 30 knots, making the races highly technical and demanding. Sailors had to deal with constant wind shifts and difficult tactical decisions, while some planned races were cancelled because of extreme conditions.
A special highlight of the championship was the Long Distance Race. Starting in around 12 knots of wind and finishing with stronger breeze close to 18 knots, the course offered exciting action, many position changes and spectacular racing across Lagos Bay.
The event also showed the growing strength of Formula Windsurfing in Europe, with experienced riders returning to competition and young sailors joining the fleet, creating an exciting future for the class.
