Guidance Notes for Organisers of Formula Windsurfing Events.
The International Formula Windsurfing Class Association

published: 20.02.2005!

Background . Formula Windsurfing should be fast , fun , spectacular short duration course racing . Its purpose- to create : greater enjoyment for sailors; an opportunity for spectators to watch , and television to capture , an exciting and easily understandable sport; and sponsors to get a return on their investment .

This version of the guidelines is based upon the experience gained over four years of spectacular international racing . In order to achieve uniformity and to maximise opportunities race organisers are encouraged to use the prescribed format for formula racing .

Key Points .
  • short duration races (approx. 20 minutes )
  • events should be kept short -3/5 days
  • events should be 'open'
  • racing area should be close to land ,with opportunity to 'pit stop' after every race
  • no extended waiting periods on the water
  • ideal fleet size is 50 /70 racers , with maximum 90 sailors on the same starting line media and spectators have an opportunity to watch before splitting fleets
  • regattas should be quick and slick , intense but easy to understand

Wind Speed , its measurement , and 'suitable conditions'.
  • the Race Officer is advised to calibrate his wind speed readings on the anchored start boat from a drifting boat to windward
  • if the wind speed is less than 7 knots in the starting area at any time during the last minute prior to the starting signal , the start should be abandoned
  • wind speed readings should be taken from approx 2 metres above the water surface
  • the Race Officer should ensure that the wind is measured over as much of the course area as possible ( at least start , windward mark , and middle of course …)
  • if pumping becomes the main method of propulsion the race should be abandoned
  • the decision on ' suitable conditions ' rests with the Race Offiver

Course Area and Courses .
  • the course area should be as close to land as possible , and as free as possible from other traffic (ie other classes on the course )
  • sailors not competing must keep clear of the competition area
  • the basic course for single fleet racing is a 'windward /leeward' , and variations of
  • the recommended course for multiple fleet racing is 'trapezoidal'; see appendix to Championship Rules for recommended course diagrams

Racing Format .
  • each competitor should sail between 3/5 races per day , depending upon the duration of the event and conditions
  • the target time for winner of a race should be between 15 and 20 minutes
  • optimum fleet size 60
  • maximum of 90 sailors , beyond which the fleet should be split
  • Start - RRS system 1 is recommended
  • Recalls- it is recommended to use black flag as a last resort
  • Scoring - see RRS App.B Windsurfing
  • Advertising - the IFWC is Category C , see ISAF regulation 21 Adverising Code
